VIDEO: Journal # 11 - from Fieldays

15 June. John's video journal shot from the floor of the Fieldays pavillion in Hamilton. Fieldays is the biggest agricultural trade show in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting a thousand exhibitors and over 130,000 visitors from 38 countries through its gates. Last year, Fieldays generated sales during and following the event in excess of $300 million. John talks about the importance of this unique trade show and briefly discusses the role of Government spending in forcing the Reserve Bank's hand on the recent increase in the Official Cash Rate. this is a general comment, not about the video. Dear John, when you are being interviewed on TV, look at the camera not the interviewer. if you look straight at the camera thousands at home will see you looking straight at them, not sideways at whoever. muldoon was aware of this strategy - he always eyeballed the camera. i'm a paid-up party member and i'm thrilled that we are about to have a change of govt! JM.

Must comment on this one! I think the best thing a politician can do -usually- is to just do what's natural for themselves. If looking into the camera isn't natural for you, then you probably won't pull it off and everyone will cringe. I have seen politicians try to do things that are not right for themselves before - never really works! I think you should follow your own advice John, and mostly ignore the political text-books and just go by you own intuition and natural understanding of people. It certainly seems to be working for you so far!

John, For the first time since being able to vote i am backing the national party. I feel the Labour party are following in the foot steps of the greens (tree hugging and shameless). I am sick of our country turning into a pc nation where the government dictates what we can and can not do. lets throw this anti smacking bill out the door and into the trash where it belongs. the real reason for this bill is to punish those that kill their kids or put them in hospital - lets compare them to terrorist! treat them like terrorists and leave parents that like to smack their childrens bottoms or hands alone. we need to focus on handing out real punishments to criminals because at the moment they are treated better than some working to lower class citizens. our nation is turning to custard!

John The Police Practice Guide released by Deputy Commissioner Rob Pope today states that “while smacking may, in some circumstances, be considered inconsequential, a prosecution may be warranted if such actions are repetitive or frequent.” We are so distressed at this latest statement issued from the police. This makes it quite clear that the discretion clause, trumpeted as the saviour to good parents, will only apply for a limited time and that in effect light smacking of an inconsequential nature will end up being prosecuted. You have, I believe, stated that you have smacked your children, how would you feel if that was making you a criminal? Knowing if you are reported your name will be in the 'black book' risking intervention by CYFS? Where did smacking cease to be inconsequential if it was repeated? That means its nothing to do with how light the smack is- rather whether its a one off. Do you feel duped? We certainly do.The general public has been. It seems like Howard Broad has a different interpretation to yourself. John, will you make this an election issue? The public will most certainly be on your side!

I am in complete agreement with Derek and Margaret Cahill. I feel not only duped, but deceived. Like you John, I have smacked my children, lightly, inconsequentially, more than once. Now, your amendment that heralded a promise of protection for a parent such as me, is now altered, in the police policy, and I am in the firing line for potential prosecution. When did your amendment ever mention 'frequency'? And I am insulted and angry that, even if not prosecuted, the details of the alleged assault' are still formally recorded. That's like having a police record without being charged! I can promise you that you will have my vote next year if you change this law. No parent should be criminalised for lovingly correcting their child with such minimal force. It might save them from a lifetime in jail!
