VIDEO: Journal 14 - Suggest a theme song!

Just back from his visits to the US and Canada, John uses this edition of his video journal to talk about the upcoming National Conference - and to ask viewers to use the comments section of this video to suggest a theme song. The conference will be held in Auckland from August 3-5. For more information about the conference, which is open to all National Party members, click here.

Note: Only helpful sugestions will be approved for publication here, but all suggestions will be logged.

For a theme song i would suggest Driven By You by Brian May. Although and oldie and also being used in advertising previously, i think this song suits as it states that the Party are driven by its members, being at conference would be a good way of acknowledging them. It also could mean that the Party is driven by public needs etc. It's upbeat and funky...maybe what the party needs! Look forward to hearing it August! Regards Steve

I suggest "Bittersweet symphony" by "The Verve" its easy for young and old alike, and suggests empathising with those who arent feeling that flash hot through music. uplifting, positive connotations and people remember it as it gets stuck in ones head. There's that, or Alice Cooper's "elected" ;) lol P.S. forgive the teenage colloquillisms, I am a teen :)

Ideally I think the Party needs to choose a song which conveys an image that both complements its perceived strengths, and counteracts its perceived weaknesses. By "perceived" I mean *public* perception of the Party, since the conference proceedings will no doubt be broadcast by the media, likely with you arriving with the music playing in the background. In order to do this I feel the Party should continue to develop the "compassionate" conservatism theme that has been facilitated by John Key's leadership, and appears to have so far been extremely effective - at least as indicated by public opinion polls. The song I would therefore suggest is "High" by the Lighthouse Family. It can be heard here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZWp1aGtCpA. This song helps to further develop and convey the favourable "positive", "forward-looking" and "compassionate" themes, which in turn also counteract the possible negative perceptions of not just the National Party, but centre-right/conservative Parties in general - namely, old fashioned and too overly concerned with "making money"/free markets. I hope my thoughts help, good luck to you John!

I hope a NZ music is used. Also to show further support for NZ music the party should donate a share of conference dinner ticket price to the NZ artist involved

George Michael's "Freedom" or Paul McCartney's "Freedom" or any other Freedom-themed song - though the latter sounds a bit Destiny Church. Thought it went with National's individual accountability, individual freedom theme - will differentiate from Labour's perceived philosphy.

Think it has to be a NZ composer. What about the 3 rd generation NZ greek fellow : John Psathas : he wrote a particually exicting piece of music (actaully for the Greek Olympic games - the olympic committee loved it) . The music called "from Olympus" I think its a v good mix of classic and modern, touched with the NZ influience. Margaret Voyce

How about "Up Where We Belong"

#17 - Caleb Griffioen 2007-07-16 17:40 - (Reply)

Correct me if I'm wrong - but I'm sure 'Up Where We Belong' was used by David Lange and Labour in their 1984 General Election Campaign. I did like hearing Colplay's 'Clocks' being played at the recent Environment Policy announcement. The tune is catchy, though I'd have to say that the lyrics aren't all that relevant. Perhaps Jennifer Lopez's 'Jenny From The Block' could be reworded for the campaign, i.e. "Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got, I'm still, I'm still Johnny from the block" - this could go well with Mr. Key's rags to riches story.
