VIDEO: Journal No. 18

08 August. John talks about the National Conference - held over the weekend in Auckland - and responds to Labour's attacks on him in the House. Noting that Labour still trails in the polls he says "they're obviously grumpy, they are completely out of ideas and they are just going to go into a mode of slinging mud." Rather than respond in kind, John says he intends to "focus on the big issues that matter to New Zealanders."

I am 100% support of Key and your National Party. All the best and good luck with the next election. Its time NZ has a good looking prime minister and most of us have had enough of Mr Clarke and the Labour Party. GO KEY AND TEAM!

In regard to the comments made about the Standards and Assessment in Education - I agree completely that certain standards and assessment baselines need to be put in place. However, I feel that care needs to be taken over the kind of assessment that is used to gather this data. I would be interested in entering in to further dialogue about this as I believe that certain current assessment tools in use across NZ are not yet up to standard.

Labour's attacks in the house are pretty spiteful. They did the same thing with Dr. Brash - digging up an old speech or quote & distorting it to their own ends. It's pretty disgusting really when they should be focusing on bigger issues. Just don't let MFAT officials in on your discussions because Goff will break every convention in the book if he could tag you with some stupid phrase like 'gone by lunch time'. What is particularly annoying about the whole Iraq thing is that Helen has largely been supportive of Bush's war on terror sending the Army to Iraq and Afghanistan. To make a distinction about not supporting the invasion is weak in my opinion. She should either keep out of it all together or properly commit. As the case is she must have a sore behind from sitting on the fence. I'm sure if you or Dr. Brash were Prime Minister at the time, with access to official information, your leave of support would likely be the same as Labours. So, in summary, Labour's essentially being a hypocritic on the issue and hiding behind political smoke and mirrors.

On the day that the tangi of child abuse victim Nia Glassie was held, on the day that a 20-year man in Mt Maungai was arrested for beating his pregnat partner, Labour chose to waste parliments time on spitful, childish, pointless attacks on Mr Key. I now know what this governments main obession is: Mr John Key. I know however from Mr Key's first speech on the underclass in New Zealand and National's plan for a work for the dole scheme that National is prepeared to do something about the underlcass, violence and child abuse in our socitiey. Labour just seems to want to play, endless, pointless dirty politics.

Good on you John, for taking a highground against Labour, by sticking to the critical issues that face Kiwis resulting from the nation-wide mismanagement under the Labour government.

One has to commend the National Party for its open minded stance on Climate Change. There is 'politics', there is 'science' and there is 'politicized science'. Unfortunately the current state of popular debate on Climate Change falls in to the latter category. As a professional meteorologist by training and one who keeps abreast of the scientific research on the topic of climate change, the verdict on the subject is: [that] empirical and theoretical evidence can not conclude beyond doubt that the current climate changes being observed are anthropogenic in origin. To come to such a conclusion would deny that the climate has changed in the past, which we know from scientific evidence, is not true. A couple of examples of recent research findings that are not widely reported by the media at large: • The ANDRILL Project in Antarctica – a joint effort by New Zealand and international researchers, has concluded that the Ross Ice shelf has ‘disappeared’ (or melted away) some 20 times in the past 5 million years. The current ‘melt down’ appears no different in its characteristics. • Current research using data from Mars suggests that the Martian atmosphere is warming at a rate that is, at minimum on par with any warming that is evident in the earth’s atmosphere. Research on solar activity and the earth’s climate is very much in its infancy, but there is growing evidence that solar activity plays a far more direct role in climatic variations than previuosly thought to be the case. Should you desire there are numerous scientific articles, which I can steer you and your readers to, that present coherent scientific views on the subject. Keep up your good work on open, fair and candid debate on this and other issues. It is the duty of all democratic governments to promote informed decisions and the right of all citizens to participate and question as necessary, such decisions.
