RADIO: The election, the economy, Immigration

John talks with presenter Neil Collins about several of the new crop of National candidates, including Nikki Kaye, who is standing in Auckland Central. The discussion then moves to Michael Cullen's pre-budget speech in Christchurch, tax cuts, movement in the exchange rates, problems at Immigration and the possibility of desperation-driven 'surprises' in the impending Budget.

New Zealanders can live and work in Australia, but cannot obtain Australian social security unless they have Australian permanent residence. New Zealanders are returning to New Zealand when they get sick or become solo parents to receive welfare payments. Why should expat New Zealanders who have worked in Australia for several years be able rely on New Zealanders to pay welfare benefits? With an increasing number of kiwis moving to Australia but not becoming Australian citizens I would like to know if the National Party is going to do anything to prevent a expats becoming a drag on the New Zealand taxpayer.
