National Party Leader John Key is congratulating Kiwi motor racing ace Scott Dixon for his historic win in the Indianapolis 500.

"Scott Dixon aimed high, worked hard, and has delivered a stunning and historic win for a New Zealander on the world motor racing stage.

"Hopefully this will be among many significant victories for the Kiwi who now shares the title with a string of motor racing legends, like AJ Foyt, Al Unser Snr, Jacques Villeneuve, Emerson Fittipaldi, and Mario Andretti.

"I would like to wish him my warmest congratulations.  He's done us proud."
