John
I am a 46 year old Kiwi chartered accountant (BCom. Auck.) living & working overseas & also voting in this election. Like you I trained with McCulloch Menzies (though in Auckland) in the early eighties.
I was going to vote National for both M.P. & party vote until you recent economic speech this week. Now I will NOT VOTE for you - simply for one reason and that is that you are CANCELLING THE BUILDING OF ROADING INFASTRUCTURE (I simply do not believe you when you say that by delaying this infarstructure spending it will mean that this roading infarstructure will get built - we all know once delayed nothing ever happens!). You are making the classic National party mistake of pandering to the government bureaucracy and welfare dependents at the expensive of building up our woeful and third world roads ! Shame on you ! Why not increase GST to cover the shortfall. We desperately need better roads (more than broadband) if our productivity is to increase
I hope you change your mind before election day
Regards
Derek Smith
Hi John
We are disappointed you have taken the axe to kiwiSuper. This has cost you our votes this time. I suspect we are not alone in voting against you because of this issue.
Hi John,
Like many kiwis I have watched in disgust and increasing despair as the current labour government ignores the wishes of the electorate and implements their own agendas, for which they were never granted a mandate.
The showerhead fiasco is simply the latest instance of their devil's bargain with the greens to stay in power, and the madness of our current mmp system may allow them to profit from it.
I believe this toxic partnership presents a huge opportunity for national in this election.
While green issues have moved from periphery to mainstream, the personnel in the green party in NZ have not, and they have also strayed from core green issues to social engineering, again with no mandate.
These actions only serve to alienate the large section of the electorate who strongly desire green initiatives and strategy, but cannot stomach the septic grab-bag of extremists currently using the green brand as their trojan horse.(Ditto labour as the party of the "working man and woman").
A truly green (and green only - no social engineering) policy position from national would capture these votes, and rid us once and for all of the breakfast cereal that is the current green party- corny policies and flaky personnel.
Presented with a choice between national with a green policy platform, and the "greens" with their road map to hair-shirts and lentils, (with a side order of social engineering), I feel sure the electorate would embrace national with both a huge sigh of relief and the question, why did it take so long?
This is bigger than idealogical stances, (green vs business etc)...but in my view represents a chance to preserve the NZ we all love, that we must not waste.
Failure to act will condemn our children to a future without the freedoms, experiences and joys that are unique to NZ, and will change what it means to be a New Zealander for ever. If we allow this to happen, not only will the social engineers have won, but history will mark us as the generation that lost the birthright of every kiwi.
John, your choice to return home to NZ suggests to me you fully understand how precious the NZ way of life is, and I dearly hope you will fight to preserve it.

Hi John,
I am tired of Labours sabotage tactics and constant shut downs of other parties visions. I am a 33 year old father of 6 and I am finding struggle with financing my family's needs but what I like about your policies is the vision of the future. Under our labour led government I feel that we have always addressed problems far too late rather than implementing solutions or more importantly having a sound plan to face anticipated issues. Most of the people I know who are in the Kiwisaver scheme know who there provider is but do not know what they are providing. I know I will be taking my extra $$$ and placing it into an investment I can control and self educate myself on. Infrastructure...as a former soldier in our Army for 12 years I can tell you that our roads are not third country, or even close too those sorts of conditions, and I believe we really too heavily on out roading. I cannot even believe that we as new zealanders would even compare our infrastructure to being somewaht like that of a third world country. Ask Aunty Helen what the roads are like in East Timor or in the Solomans. Shame on you Brendon. We have ports and rail for transporting goods around our country so why should we accomodate someones choice to own a car? I do support your policy on the tiriti o waitangi and your education policies. However overall it is an MMP election and feel that your party, National, need to show alignment to some form of coalition. I would like to wish you all the best and although I am undecided until the day I do hope for change and leadership with forward vision and direction.
Kia Kaha to you and your party...

DEAR JOHN, I THINK THAT LABOUR & THE GREENS HAVE NO TOUCH ON REALITY OR HOW TO RUN A COUNTRY. THEY ARE MORE WORRIED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT THAN THE PEOPLE THAT ARE ACTUALLY LIVING IN THAT ENVIRONMENT. OR ARE THEY ALL JUST CLUTCHING AT STRAWS TO WIN VOTES. AS FOR WINSTON PETERS HE HAS NO IDEA PERIOD. wHAT GOOD WOULD IT DO TO PUT KIWIBANK IN WITH THE STOCK MARKET WHEN WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF A CREDIT CRISIS. IN MY OPINION I RECKON THE ONLY PARTY THAT HAS ANY HOLD ON REALITY & TRUTH IS THE NATIONAL PARTY. REAL POLICIES FOR REAL PEOPLE.
