Campaign blog: 20 October

I started this weekend getting my hands dirty on Saturday morning taking part in a makeover at Tamaki Primary School (click the picture to watch a related video via YouTube or click here to watch it on this blog).

It was good to get some exercise, given that the time pressures of an intense election campaign do not allow me much time to get any exercise.

On Saturday afternoon I went to a colourful Diwali celebration at the Viaduct Harbour.

The Indian community were out in force and I got a great reception.  Helen Clark, John Banks and myself were all presented with hats to wear – pictures of which made their way into at least one Sunday newspaper yesterday.

Then yesterday I flew to Nelson for a family BBQ day out.  It was a chance for families to enjoy the fine weather and entertainment put on by local National MP Nick Smith.

There was children's face painting (including "JK08"!) and a sausage sizzle raising money for the local hospice.  A few weeks ago I announced extra funding for hospices, which do a vital job for communities.

After the Nelson visit, I flew to Wellington for a press conference in the National Party Caucus room at Parliament about the situation with our banking system.

I announced our intention to approach the issue of wholesale banking deposit guarantees in a constructive and bipartisan way with the current Government.

We should be moving towards such a guarantee given that we do not want to risk seeing banks having to tighten credit in New Zealand.

Tomorrow (Monday), I'm spending most of the day campaigning in Auckland.

John Key

And Helen Clark had the cheek to respond that you are still on your trainer wheels and lack the experience to help them with the financial crisis. It's time to put these liars in their place.

A potentual vote catcher and a real need that could be fixed (and has not been by Labour) for small $. I sit as an industry member on the AUT Esol committee. I have become increasingly aware of the shortage of funding for English tuition for new immigrants. Courses over subscribed by 100%. Invest in their English skills today and they will stop being a benefit burden and become a taxpayer tomorrow. It make economic sence! The Immigrants will love you! Industry will love you! Educationists will love you! Your Budget will benefit. Seems like a nobrainer. Interestingly when i suggested a year ago that AUT should be talking to the National Party the University types told me i was being presumptuous. We will see :-)

Come on John, I don't like what I hear that the gap between Labour and National is shrinking. We can't have another Labour government!! You guys have got to come up with something FRESH to knock these New Zealand Wreckers back Everyone I talk to agrees so where are they getting their support? I'm all for you. Regards Beryl Butler

I would like to know exactly what a National Party lead Govt will do to ensure "money" does not win battles in the environment court - as it does now. I also wish to see "country of orgin" labels on all foods so that I can choose what I eat, instead of you doing so. I think, given Helen Clarks history of paint signing speeding tickets etc more could be make of the "TRUST label she has given herself.

I am already a National voter - so preaching to the converted is not too difficult. However....why not show some leadership. An iconic Auckland landmark (One Tree Hill) is still treeless after how many years of pandering ot small interest groups? This is a city icon. Show some leadership. Get some votes....put a tree back up there. Show NZ'ers that you care about ensuring small radical groups not getting their way by meek council inaction.

Dear John Do you not think Banks should tighten credit (- isn't his part of the problem? I'm talking about the general public. It seems there is a large number of people who continually overspend and live on credit! Banks need to help play a part by placing stronger restrictions on loaning money instead focussing on making large profits. My son visited the bank and was offered 3 times to have a credit card (in the one visit) - he was 18 at the time and a student! Fortunately he was strong enough to say no but there are a lot who can't. Regards, a ` baby boomer '! :)

Hi ya I have spoken with some Nationl supporters and they still feel unsure of John, in all instances I have talked the commercial side up and they have all said OH OK, that sounds better. Whilst we are promoting the "warm and fuzzies" we need to wind up some hard stuff, I think the press are definitely not helping, goodness me the bleeding hearts on the left sleeve brigade! The major difference in people is this in my veiw, commercially we rarely criticize the competitor and say things like "Oh Yes that is how they do it but we do it like this" Politicians however tend to just attack on a personal basis and have no manners. We are also not hitting home on the hard facts, I never see the state of the books mentioned, what about the attack on Shane Jones about signing the docs to lead the fellow in. You need to manage the press better team. Cheers T

Good on you John for picking up a spade and getting stuck in on the make over for Tamaki School. Life Church who does this every year loves giving to the community in areas that really count and make a difference to people lives in so many ways. Nice work.

Keep on the way you finished the week: looking like Prime Minister material already & a 'breath of fresh air' rather than the tired old labour lot, who like the late 80s again have led us to the edge of bankruptcy.

In the last 12 elections I have voted every time for a Labour Government... But if an election were held today I would vote for National Thank you Mr Key

Hi John I was raised in a Labour household, even presented a boquet to Lady Nash at a Deb Ball in Lower Hutt, spent hours out selling raffle tickets for them. Well not this time and no more. I am voting National. I would like you to get ACT and the Moari Party onside before the election to ensure National wins. I am listening and reading with interest and admiration about what National will do for us. You have my full support. Regards Christine

Hiya John, Fab job you are doing - Nats have always had my vote by the way so no trying to convince me you are the party to vote for. However I do have one gripe - Please pronounce New Zealand - New Zeeland and not New Ziland. Cheers and all good to go in November - Rock on John Key :-)

good work John. Keep it up, reign in the renegade comments from your team...keep a tight ship and you'll get there!

Mr Key, Spotted you in Kumeu today, holding up traffic, as you crossed the road. Shortened my lunch hour, but you still get my vote. I never give my party vote to National... such is the nature of MMP. If you had a preferred running mate, which party would, he or she be from? I've always given my party vote to Winston, for personal reasons, but this election, I'm wavering. Cheers Bruce

On behalf of Meremere 12 of Ohope Beach School i'd like to compliment you on feeding all your information on politics to Meremere 12 students. Our focus this term was advertising and our class were deciding on ideas for assembly as we are running it next week. Our teacher Mrs Jones had one of her midnight thoughts and came up with the idea POLITICS so most of our class have been researching on all the different parties and some of us chose National. And as we were researching I found a page on you and as you are a national party leader I decided to research on you and gathered up a whole page on information. Can't wait till next week!

I'm getting a bit worried this week John. Maybe you will have to box your guys around the ears a bit and tell them to be very careful what they say. I am getting the same error-laden vibes I got in 2005. Your campaign needs some clever bite now. Why not counter Labour's ads with pictures of the two Helens - the photoshopped one and the real one, with the fake one saying Trust Me, and the real one laying out all the secret agenda things that have happened over the past 9 years. We need some excitement in the campaign. Barbara, Mt. Maunganui
