NEWS: Move on smacking bill shows Labour out of touch

Helen Clark's move to make Sue Bradford's anti-smacking bill a Government bill shows how out of touch the Prime Minister is with the majority of New Zealanders, says National Party Leader John Key. "The fact is that around 80% of New Zealanders in recent polls are opposed to the ban on smacking. "Why does Helen Clark think she can get away with arrogantly ramming this bill through Parliament in the face of such overwhelming public opposition? "Helen Clark has nothing but contempt for the views of the majority of New Zealand parents. "This tiring Labour Government demonstrates daily that it is increasingly out of touch and offside with the views of the majority of New Zealanders." Your remark about contempt is in my view exactly right, this contempt for the people of New Zealand is also shared by the people with whom she surrounds herself. Part of that problem is their collective lack of real life experiences - just living productive daily lives as the bulk of us do. I have looked at the profiles of Helen and her closest ministers and there is not one of them that have the experience or skills to run my small business. It is time that they realised that being a well educated academic socialist activist does not give them the right to meddle in the daily lives of good people, nor does it provide the skill sets needed to understand how those same people think, and although this may surprise them, even those of us with only a high school education, are capable of thinking and contributing in substantial and positive ways to New Zealand. Labour, for all their rhetoric claiming to be the champions of the so called working class have in recent time, been well out of touch with how those people live and think. Labour's method runs more to telling people what and how to live and think. Correct me if I am wrong, but has this not been tried in other countries - and failed!

To many NZers this is a key issue but from the last Video Journal it almost seems a minor annoyance in passing to John Key. Speaking with colleagues it appears that some of us hold no hope that National will push very hard to revert the mess that Helen is about to see through even if they are elected in. As noted in another comment, John, do you have any plans at all around a commitment to hearing and acting on NZers wishes if you are voted in?

A friend of mine was just telling me yesterday about how her daughter was playing up the night before. My friend doesn't believe in smacking but has resorted to it about 3 times in the child's life when the 11 yr has been intractable rude and highly disrespecful. So the other night this 11 yr old now claims when she receives a smack for continued and escalating appalling disrespect "you can't do that!, you're not allowed to smack me!". Turns out her teachers are already telling kids that it's illegal to smack. Teachers are planting seeds in childrens minds that their parents are a threat. This is directly affecting child behaviour. It's appalling abuse of power. Do I have to start pre-empting this by training my kids that teachers can't be trusted to tell the truth?

Sadly Adrien I think the answer to your question is yes, although a better approach is no doubt to train your children to question and further research what they are told. This will hold them in good stead throughout their lives.

unbelieveable , if we cant trust the teachers in our schools to back up the parents who can we trust .radical teachers have the power to train the young minds to radical beliefs. to often they enterfere with our children fixing promblems that dont exist.bring back good relations with P.T.A.

There is nothing radical about teaching children that resorting to phsyical violence is not the way to solve problems.
