PM pledges $50 million in Budget for cycleway

The Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, John Key has today promised $50 million dollars over three years for the New Zealand Cycleway Project.

Speaking at the New Zealand Hotel Industry Conference in Auckland, Mr Key says the project, first raised at the Job Summit, will create a high quality tourism asset that will enhance New Zealand’s competitiveness as a tourism destination, provide employment, and stimulate economic development opportunities in regional economies.

“I propose to create a series of ‘Great Rides’ of New Zealand, with a long term aim of creating a network throughout the country.”

In this month’s Budget, the Ministry of Tourism will receive $50 million in operating funding to progress the Cycleway.

“Some promising routes have already been identified and I expect to have an announcement on them in the next couple of months.

“I am also establishing an Advisory Group that will look at other regional cycleway proposals and work with those regions on feasibility work and technical advice.

“This $50 million investment will create jobs through its design and construction, while also creating a high quality tourism asset that will complement our 100% Pure New Zealand brand.”

Please fast forward the cycle way. My daughter lives in Taiwan and uses the various cycleways every weekend. There are even 'Cycle Cafes' on the cycle paths with a cycle repair shop attached. Cant wait for them to be a happening thing here.

The Otage Rail Trail is highlight to many such ideas which are already up and running which do attract a lot of kiwis and tourist alike to have some fun outside. http://www.slspectrum.co.nz/tours/central-otago-rail-trail.html?gclid=CP7ooKi3u5oCFRwpawodmkW3bw is the url for this if you do a google search on cyleways you will find a large number of local councils have also taken this initiative up also and done some really excellent work. This funding helps to get the bigger picture bank rolled to start off. Good on John Keys for taking this initiative!!!! The stats speak for them self a cyclist will tend to stay 3-4 times longer as a tourist in NZ and will spend more money which is far better for our economyand provides a lot more employment along such trails where a lot of these places where ghost towns the rejueventation has been remarkable. My mate just did the Otago Rail trailand is off to do it with his daughter and grand children next year.

is that a vision or what. Imagine another set of maps to choose from when you head off on your bike anywhere / anytime . No you cant but this cycle way could present a new (or really old) network we have missed out on for no ggod reason. Cycleways could become like a super conductor, an awesome new network , completely separate and independent from road or rail etc . Its own bridges and tunnels etc. I had a similar vision once upon a time in Europe.I imagined these cool cold Dutchies waking up one winter morning to a crisp white slab of ICE ALL OVER THE JOLLY PLACE . WHERE COULD,NT YOU GO?????? and for free , maybe. Actually Dad told me it could cost several bowls of yummy hot Pea and Ham Soup.My respect for this soup has since grown immensely. Go the super cycle conductor network - all the way too.

I think the cycle way is a great idea. A low carbon tourist activity and mode of transport will offset the long flights tourist are conscious about, when flying to New Zealand. Fruit growers could also attract workers on working holidays, who could use the cycle ways to go from job to job.

What an awesome idea John, revolutionary thinking. Please hurry it up though, there are many people losing their jobs that could start working on this now! You will be providing them with income, investing in tourism infrastructure and providing the workers with the hope they so desperately need in such times. Brilliant.

We operate a highly successful, Auckland based tourism company called TIME Unlimited ("To Integrate Maori Experiences") - see www.newzealandtours.travel . In our opinion, the cycleway is a fantastic idea and in generations to come, New Zealand will be very proud of this asset to our country. In fact it will complement Te Araroa (The Long Pathway) extremely well and will cement our image as a clean, green, environmentally-friendly country very well. Bring it on! Kia Ora John, Yes, as another Auckland tour provider, we cannot speak highly enough about your proposal on the Cycle Way... it's ideal for all. As you are aware (being the current Minister of Tourism), we need more unique tourist activities too, and this is just visionary!! BTW, Great to have talked with you during our private meeting recently, and thanks again for opening the Kumeu Visitor Information Centre and giving our Cruise Boat Shore Excursion passengers a one-on-one, they really appreciated it (... many of them have added links to the 'Key Blog' as well). so any news/comments will be going world-wide! Naku noa na, Donna & Stuart Hamilton. Auckland's ECO-tour & FARM visit - Coast to Coast Tours.
