Press Conference - Post Cabinet 14 December

14 December. Press conference following Cabinet. John Key announces that the Government has agreed upon a Maori flag to fly alongside the official Government flag on Waitangi Day. Following that, he announces details of Prince William's impending (January 17-19) visit to New Zealand and his own plans for travel to the climate change conference in Copenhagen. He goes on to discuss the upcoming half year Treasury report and action pending in the House before it rises for the year on Wednesday. The Prime Minister's announcements are followed by questions from the press.

What is the "official Government flag" of New Zealand? The last time I checked the Flags, Emblems, and Names Protection Act 1981, there is such a flag as the "New Zealand Flag".

John, on behalf of my whole family, those members living in NZ and those living abroad, please please please, do the right thing by New Zealand at Copenhagen and commit to a 40% by 2020 emission reduction target.

Hi John, I think that you have chance to do something extraordinary at Copenhagen, as well a chance to be remembered as a truly extraordinary NZ leader. Please make your mark by fighting for and committing to the kind of emission cuts that are really going to help everyone on the planet. Thanks and good luck over there.

Hi John, just to let you know that even though lots of big business doesn't want you to do very much at all on climate change, pretty much everyone i know wants you to commit to the kind of emission cuts that are actually going to help. Good luck over there. I've just received a E-mail from the Green Peace. It reminds me about the environment situation at the moment. New Zealand seems the 1st green country in the world. And although I've done drug crimes, but I still wanted you to give something back to the earth - the one that breed us for over billion years. TO protect her. You must do something instead of earning money for National Party through business.

Hi Mr Key: When you go to Copenhagen you should say something like this: "We of New Zealand have dedicated ourselves to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 (or whatever?). You have our word and our commitment that this will be done. This commitment will be integrated into our national constitution. We will only revoke on this obligation if, in the future, it becomes reasonably clear that the evidence associated with problematic AGW is definitively erroneous. We do not need to sign an international treaty nor participate in an international carbon tax to meet this responsible obligation, and nor do we intend on doing so". Of course it would be crazy to sign up to a treaty without a clause that eliminates the need to comply with the treaty, considering that the science is still controversial. Though the need for an international tax is in my view a nonsense, a clause based on the fact that we don't yet know enough about the science backing the premise of the treaty should surely be integrated with whatever deal is finally established. I think this is the least you can do. And here is an interesting link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2zaPCYgovg&feature=player_embedded
