Hi John. It seems to me that when it comes to mining our resources: 'we have already spent our grandchildren s wealth, spending what we haven't worked for'; And now we are talking about destroying their natural heritage. Just how greedy can western Capitalism get. All we seem to consider in this day and age is: 'what can I get my hands on for me!'It's high time we stopped living on credit and considered future generations.

In weighing up the pros and cons of mining vs the environment it seems to me that capitalism heavily plays into the mining camp. Value can be clearly determined in terms of output and jobs created. The value of the environment however is subjective and decisions made in terms of the 51% majority opinion. To make informed decisions it seems to me that there should be public debate as to how we quantify the value of our environmental heritage. Sure we have the RMA to describe certain standards of protection but we should place an acknowledged financial value in place as well. Question then becomes - do we really have the political will to do this? I suspect not.

Our parks will make more money as tourist attractions than mines in the long run John.
