PM appoints Whanau Ora Minister

Prime Minister John Key has today appointed Hon. Tariana Turia as Minister Responsible for Whanau Ora.

Mr Key says Mrs Turia's passion for Whanau Ora, coupled with her strong foundation work to date on the policy, will make her an effective and valuable leader of the initiative.

"Mrs Turia has worked tirelessly to make the Whanau Ora concept a reality, and she has a clear vision for how Whanau Ora will help New Zealand families.

"Mrs Turia will work closely with other relevant Government Ministers and the Whanau Ora Governance Group to oversee the roll-out and progress of Whanau Ora."

Mrs Turia's appointment is effective immediately. She is also Minister for Disabilities Issues, Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, Associate Health Minister and Associate Social Development and Employment Minister.

I am concerned that the announcement has not come with clarification of who is eligible for Whanau Ora. John Key has said it will be available to all New Zealanders in need, while the now Minister of Whanau Ora has been form that it is only destined for Maori. While I appreciate that Maori on average are worse off than other races. On an individual, case by case basis it would be unfair to help a Maori family and to ignore a Pacific Island or European family in the same position.
